DMG file is a compressed file format being used widely on Mac computer. Windows OS doesn't natively support DMG disk image files, so if you need to create a bootable USB drive from a DMG file, mostly for bootable Mac OS X or macOS installation USB, you need a special utility to help you complete the task.

There is also the possibility of converting the file into a format more suitable for Windows, which is the ISO file format for disk images. Considering the above, let's look at different ways to create a bootable drive from a DMG file on a Windows computer.

Part 1: Convert DMG to ISO and Make Bootable USB from ISO

Since Windows doesn't offer native support for DMG files, you can first convert the file to ISO. Why? A lot of easier to find an app for making a bootable USB from ISO file. The easy way to do this is to use Command Prompt. Don't be intimidated by the non-GUI environment even if you don't have any experience. If you follow the steps below, you can convert any DMG file to ISO and then create a bootable USB using the converted file.

Step 1: Open Command Prompt by typing cmd in the Run windows and hitting Enter.

Step 2: In the command interface, go to the directory in which the DMG file is saved. You can do this by using the 'cd' command followed by the file path, then pressing Enter. For example, if your disk image is in D: and Command Prompt is currently in 'C:', then type 'd:' (no quotes) and press Enter. If it is in a subfolder, type 'cd subfolder', and so on.

Step 3: Use the following command to convert the DMG file to ISO:

hdiutil convert /path/sourceimagefile.dmg -format UDTO -o /path/targetmage.iso

Step 4: Once the ISO file has been created, you can use a burning tool to create the bootable USB drive. To do that, continue with this guide.

  • File damged or broken after conversion.
  • Failed booting from burned USB disk.
  • May not work with the latest DMG file.
  • Complex and take more time.

Part 2: Create Mac OS X Bootable USB Installer from DMG

How To Use Transmac

Androidphonesoft DMG Editor is a powerful software application for Windows that will allow you to manage the non-native DMG format even if you have no experience. The interface is uncluttered, and you can even use the tool to view files, extract them, edit the DMG and even copy it to a disk. The burn function has one of the highest success rates in the industry, which makes this an ideal utility for our purpose.

Created by the talented team of developers at Androidphonesoft, DMG Editor is currently the most intuitive Windows app for handling Apple's disk image format. Each of its functions have been tested on various Windows versions, with different types of DMG files and on different PC brands. This thorough testing means no wasted DVDs or corrupted files. As long as your DMG file is in good shape, you can directly create a bootable disk.

Step 1 Install DMG Editor

Download and install DMG Editor on your Windows PC.

Step 2 Plug in USB Drive

Launch the application and click on the 'Burn' section. You will also see other modules such as Edit, Extract and Copy.

Step 3 Start Burning ISO File to USB

Now import the DMG file by clicking the 'Load DMG' button, and click on 'Burn'.

In a few moments, your bootable USB flash drive will be ready for use. Since you haven't done any conversion, you can use this directly on a Mac for program installation, which you cannot do with the first method.

Part 3: Create Bootable USB from DMG in Windows Via PowerISO

Another well-known disk image utility is PowerISO. Apart from being ideal for burning ISO files, it can also burn a DMG file to USB to create a bootable drive. There are some settings that you have to keep in mind when burning with this software, but it's easy to get the hang of it once you do it a couple of times.

Step 1: Download PowerISO and install it in your Windows PC. Launch the app and insert a USB drive into a free USB slot in your computer.

Step 2: You can import the DMG file directly by clicking on ‘Burn' in the toolbar or going to Tools >Burn. In the Burn window, select the DMG file from the Source File section.

Step 3:Now review the settings to select the burn speed. The default will be the maximum your hardware can handle, so you can reduce that. You can also choose to finalize the disk and verify it. Finalizing means you can't save any more files on the drive, but it primarily applies to DVDs and CDs. Choosing ‘Verify' will prompt the software to execute an additional process after the burning is done. Any errors in the bootable USB will show up at that point.

Step 4: Now click on 'Burn' and wait for the progress bar to reach 100%. Your bootable USB is now ready.

  • Expensive for a single license.
  • Higher failure rate for bootable device.
  • Ugly user interface.

The Bottom Line:

The second two methods are recommended if you don't have much experience working with DMG files, but DMG Editor will appeal to novices and experts alike. The clean interface and minimal user input means a lower chance of errors while creating the bootable media.

If your Mac suddenly refuses to boot up properly, you might need bootable macOS install USB to make repairs. But how do you create such a disk if all you're left with is a Windows 10 computer? Fortunately, there's a great tool that you can use for free to create bootable macOS media on a USB drive in a Windows 10 environment. This article shows you how to download a macOS DMG file, format a USB drive using a GUID Partition Table, burn the DMG to the drive and boot your Mac from the USB. All the steps except the last one are done on a Windows 10 machine.

Create Bootable Usb From Dmg Windows 8

Part 1: Download macOS or Mac OS X DMG File

The first step is to get the DMG disk image file for the version of macOS that you want. You can get a copy of the latest macOS version from Apple download portal or App Store here. There are also several other direct download sites that offer various versions of Mac OS X in DMG format rather than the standard APP format that runs on Mac. Since you're working in a Windows environment, you need the DMG rather than the APP file.

Part 2: Format USB Drive to GPT

Mostly, the USB drive was formmated to FAT32 in default when being shipped out from the factory. However, FAT32 can be only used for installing OS with legacy BISO, which doesn't work for macOS. So the next step is to format your USB drive in the GPT partition style in order to burn installation files to the desired USB drive. You can do this in Command Prompt as admin. In elevated Command Prompt (Ctrl+Shift+Enter), input the following series of commands followed by Enter after each line:
List disk
Select Disk X (X stands for the USB drive name that appears after the previous command)
Convert GPT
Create partition primary

Part 3: Create Bootable macOS USB from Windows 10

You have now formatted the partition of USB drive. It's time to download TransMac for Windows. Although this is a premium software, you can use the initial free trial period to create a bootable macOS USB drive on Windows 10. After installing the application, follow the sequence of steps shown below:

Step 1: Right-click the icon and select Run as Administrator from the contextual menu. Choose Run when prompted.

Step 2: Insert your formatted USB drive, and you will be able to see it in the TransMac software on the left panel.

Step 3: Right-click the USB and select Restore with Disk Image in the contextual menu. Click Yes in the warning popup.

Step 4: You will see a window that says Restore Disk Image to Drive. Here, select your DMG file in the dropdown menu and click OK.

Depending on the system configuration, this can take anywhere from a few minutes to a couple of hours. Once the progress bar is at 100%, a bootable USB is ready.

Part 4: Boot macOS Install USB on Mac

Now remove the USB drive and insert it into the Mac computer. To boot from the disk, you need to hold down the option key when you hear the boot chime. This will take you to the Startup Disk Manager, where you should be able to see the USB drive. It might have a different name, but as long as it is bootable, you'll be able to see it there. Once you select it, the computer will boot from the disk and the macOS installation will begin.

The whole process might look a bit complicated if this is your first time, but just follow the instructions in this article and you should be fine. That being said, you need to be careful when downloading the DMG file and formatting your USB drive. If you don't do these two steps correctly, the output drive from the TransMac software won't be bootable, which means you can't install macOS using it, and you may need to do the whole thing over again.

In our previous post, we shared an easy method to How To Create macOS Catalina Bootable USB on Windows: 4 Easy Steps (+Video Tutorial). We also shared a method on How to Create a Bootable Disk of MacOS X: 2 Easy Steps using a MAC system. Today, we will dive into a much deeper method on How To Create macOS Big Sur Bootable USB on Windows!

macOS 11 Big Sur has just been released. The update brings several important improvements to the operating system relative to the best Macs while offering additional stability.

macOS Big Sur follows in the footsteps of macOS Catalina, but if Catalina was a slight improvement in macOS Mojave, the new version of the system is the biggest change in Apple’s operating system in recent years. The main change is the switch to a chipset developed by Apple. Along with macOS Catalyst, the update finally provides full support for iOS and iPadOS apps in Mac operating systems. Apple has also worked on improving efficiency and power.

We also noted a change in the appearance of native macOS applications. Apple introduced the changes with Messages, Mail, Photos, Calendar, and even Finder, all in a new, much more compact and optimized design. We’ll also finally get improvements that are more in line with iOS updates with macOS Big Sur, including the widget feature that came with iOS 14 and iPad 14, which makes the entire Apple product experience more harmonious and solid.

This is also the biggest macOS update in recent years, so we have a lot to discuss. Be sure to keep this page in bookmarks. We will update it with fresh information and features.

macOS 11 Big Sur: System Requirements

If you want to download and install macOS 11, you’ll have to make sure your Mac is actually able to run it. And, unfortunately, the system requirements of macOS have grown with the update. We went ahead and listed the Big Sur-compatible Macs below.

  • Apple MacBook 12 (2015 and newer);
  • Apple MacBook Air (2013 and newer);
  • Apple MacBook Pro (2013 and newer);
  • Apple Mac Mini (2014 and newer);
  • Apple iMac (2014 and newer);
  • Apple iMac Pro (all models);
  • Apple Mac Pro (2013 and newer);

macOS 11 Big Sur: Features

Safari is an underrated macOS hero. The improvements that come with the new update make the browser faster – now, according to Apple, it’s 50% faster than Chrome – along with simultaneously improved privacy and optimized energy consumption. But that’s not all. Presumably, this is the biggest update Apple has received since its first release.

The new version of Safari promises a host of new features, including smart tracking that provides you with a privacy report for every site you visit, saves passwords from tracking them for hacking attempts, supports extensions for WebExtensions API, and gets a selection of new extensions in the App Store, along with a built-in translation feature.

There’s one interesting feature here: the browser homepage has become extremely customizable, so you’ll be able to change the background image and add/edit sections.

This service’s capabilities have been inferior to their iOS analog for some time, but now you’ll be able to use Pinned Messages, Notes, and Updated Groups that will come with iOS 14, which is nice. Basically, all updates share the iOS 14 features, which is nice to see. The update will also offer a better search, a redesigned sample of photos, and new effects in messages.

Airpods Update

Besides the exciting support for Spatial Audio for AirPods Pro, we expect significant improvements in AirPods support in macOS. Instead of messing with Bluetooth settings, every time you want to use headphones with your Mac, they automatically switch to a Mac when you start using your computer. AirPods will now easily and intuitively switch between devices without any additional action.

Sidebar in Mail and Photos

Apple Mail and Photos apps are long out of date, so Apple has introduced a new design for most of its apps, among which the new sidebars in Mail and Photos are the most visible. The Photos app will look the same as the iOS 14 version.

MAC Control Center

One of the best things about iOS is the very convenient Control Center, which allows you to change many settings on the go. macOS Big Sur will transfer this functionality to Macs, providing easy access to them from the menu, so you can easily change the most popular settings without going to a separate Settings app.

Widgets in Notification

Create Bootable Usb From Dmg Windows 10

As with iOS 14, macOS 10.16 Big Sur has widgets for the notification menu, making it easier to access important information with a user-friendly interface. These widgets can be customized to suit your needs and preferences.

MAC Catalyst

An important addition to macOS Mojave has been the integration of some popular iOS apps. But with Mac Catalyst, new APIs and tools for app developers promise to move even more iOS apps into the Mac operating system. With these tools, you get features such as changing window size, keyboard tools that allow you to transform your app into a Mac environment, breaking away from the problems of ported apps with the iPhone.
